Milo's Championship Pick

What's up NCBL the season has come down to the final game between this year powerhouse teams. This is a fitting ending to what was an exciting season. Both teams are primed and ready for battle and this time there are no excuses. Everyone would have their own theory as to who would win including myself but let’s take a closer look at both teams and their make up to determine the outcome. There are many factors that would determine the winner of this game and I'm glad to point them out so that we can explore the outcome. Here is what Milo thinks of the championship matchup which would be the most anticipated in a while.

Linden vs. White Plains:

The battle between the best of the East is on and only one can claim supremacy. This is not the NBA trying to promote Kobe and Lebron in the finals, this is the two best teams earning it and performing on a level above everyone else. Don't hate Linden because they are a model franchise with players who consistently beat opponents year after year. They might not have the superstars like other teams possess or like to claim but their swagger cannot be denied.

I've heard other teams and player’s trash talks this team to the point where you would think they had done something wrong. Yet those same players and teams when they have to put up or shut up usually shut up because of a defeat. If you ask me it's a compliment for the coaches and players of Linden because of their success. I believe if people talk about you whether it's complimentary or otherwise it says a lot about you as an individual. In this case it says a lot about the characters on this team because over the last three years I've heard Linden name mentioned in almost every conversation with regards to championships.

White Plains on the other hand is experiencing success on a level that doesn't surprise many. They have put together a good balanced team in just one year and now are in the "Battle of Armageddon". Before I make my prediction let’s take a look at both teams to determine who will win this matchup. Maybe after reading this article some of you might change your bet with the bookies (again we are a religious entity and by no means am I condoning gambling). Let’s take a look at some similarities both teams share and the areas I feel would be critical in each team success for this game.

Both teams went 9 wins - 1 loss this season, both teams won their division handily, both teams are ranked 1 & 2 Seeds. Linden was 2 points short of their second undefeated regular season; White Plains lost that opportunity the last game of the regular season against Linden.
Both teams have complete teams but go about their business differently. Linden likes to finesse their way to wins but can mix it up if they have too, while White Plains on the other hand loves to come at you with aggression and hard play. This game being too aggressive can cost White Plains especially with the refs calling it close. Finesse can also hurt Linden if the refs let them play and bite the whistle.

Lets look at the facts from this year. Linden averaged 14 points better than their opponents they faced this year while White Plains averaged 20 points more. White Plains dominated teams with strong play in the middle and guards that bring it. Linden dominated teams with their ball movement and stellar guard play. Not to mention their forwards are capable of taking over a game if needed.

HOME COURT OR NOT

Which team will have the edge in home court advantage? I think this game unlike most home court would be a factor. You might as well call Freeport gym Linden's gym because they never seem to lose there. This year they played 5 games there and won every one. White Plains on the other hand played most of their games at Kennedy gym going 6 wins - 1 loss and you know who beat them of course Linden. Let's not forget White Plains played one game at Freeport this year and won in blow out fashion so I know they could play there also. Both teams have guards who like to run and push the ball. Linden would not be able to trap or pressure the speedy guards of White Plains due to the size of the court. Turnovers might occur but it will not be because of poor guard play. Remember Linden defeated White Plains the last game of the season by 15 points at Kennedy gym which at the time was White Plains house. The gym was smaller so spacing was an issue and the 3 point line seemed closer. This time there will be lots of room to beat a player without going out of bounds.

Here are the keys for this game that would determine the winner. Which team sets the tone early and often has the better chance. Linden never panics so I expect them to be focused even if they are down plenty. Which guard tandem performs better should be key because it neutralizes their opponent's interior and also affects the way coaches uses their bench. Rebounding should be key especially on long three point shots.

If Linden can controls the boards and keep White Plains to one shot or limit their second chances that will boost their confidence down the stretch. If they don't; White Plains can run away with the game. Foul shooting also will be important because of the style of play both teams exhibit, refs would be more inclined to call it tight. We saw in the previous matches leading up to this game that teams intentionally fouled to stop the clock so it's important that players execute on the line. Bench play will be important because I feel some starters will be in early foul trouble and have to rely on their bench to keep them in the game. Whose bench performs better will likely win.

Just a precaution with predictions, sometimes you are right and sometimes you are wrong but there is a fine line that distinguishes team’s success and failures. Retribution can play a big part in this championship game because twice this year Linden has foiled White Plains plans first by defeating them on their home court and in so doing ended their perfect season which only Linden has achieved in the last 3 years. I know Linden is ready and White Plains is waiting but who will win? I know I will get a lot of flak from players about this pick but I will give Linden the edge this game because they somehow love the challenge. Linden defeats White Plains in the battle of Armageddon solidifying their claim as the best of the best. Linden wins by 2 points in a close, hard nose fight to the finish.

Well that's it I picked a team happy? Dave and my boys from White Plains I couldn't sleep when I made this pick because I know what time it is but to those faithful followers come out in droves and support any team because I guarantee you will get your money’s worth. Carlton my man I know you are smiling and ready so keep it real and let the league know "They are Witnesses".

Linden you better not make me look bad because when I pick against your team you win and when I do you never disappoint (Troy, Dave, and co keep it real) . Thanks to all for a great season.
I really enjoyed every minute of it and look forward to next season where teams should be ready for battle. Thanks to the webmaster for the opportunity, the commissioners, coaches and players for their insights. No one knows what tomorrow might bring but one thing is certain God will provide. God Bless until next time enjoy the game and players remember to represent and give the fans the show they deserve. To all other teams practice so that you come prepared for next season with a renewed fervor.

NOTE FROM THE WEBMASTER: This game will be streamed live to those who won’t be able to make it to the gym, like myself  A link will be placed on the site which will take you to the live feed.
